The George West Junior High has had a very busy first two six weeks.  Yearling Volleyball ended on a high note.  The 7th graders ended their season 7- 1.  The 8th graders ended their season as District Champions, 8-0.   Yearling Football came to a close with both 7th and 8th graders ending their season beating Three Rivers.  No time to rest for the Yearlings.  Basketball has already started practicing.  Both the boys and girls will play their first game on November 20th, Lady Yearlings in Freer and Yearlings at home.  Allison Bryce ran in the District Cross Country meet in Dilley and placed third.  The marching band received all ones at their UIL Marching Competition in October.  Congratulations to all of the students who dedicate themselves to these activities.  We would also like to thank all of the coaches, directors, and sponsors who spend numerous hours after and before school practicing and preparing for all of these kids and their competitions and games.

Academically, students have been preparing for the UIL competition that will be held the week of November 17th – 21st for in house contests and then students will travel to Natalia on December 5th for all remaining ones.  Dedicated students have been practicing for their events during their lunches, advisory, before and after school, and even during any free time they have throughout their day.  Good luck to all of the students who go above and beyond the normal academics and compete in these UIL competitions.

GWJHS participated in Red Ribbon Week during the last week in October.  Activities throughout the week that promoted being drug free included wearing red, reading about Red Ribbon Week, activities sheets, and even a Door Decorating Contest.   The winner for the door decorating contest was Mrs. Keadle’s Advisory class.

Homecoming week was another busy week.  Students, parents, and teachers helped decorate the campus including the front lawn, halls, and doors.  The competition put on by the GW Booster Club was a tough one.  Over all, the Junior High won the overall most spirited campus.  Mrs. Blevins and Mrs. Terry won the door decoration for the junior high.  I would like to thank everyone that participated, including the following parents: Mr. and Mrs. David Cantu and Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Campbell.  The parental support that the Junior High has is unbeatable.  GO HORNS!

Tutorials Strengthen Success:  Students who failed a class the second six weeks will be required to attend tutorials after school.  This is a time students will be offered extra help and provided an opportunity to catch up on assignments.  Students who regularly ride buses will be provided with transportation.   Tutorial days are Monday and Tuesday.   Buses leave at 4:30.  Any student may make arrangements to stay for tutorials on Thursday but transportation will not be provided.

Accelerated Reader (AR):  Teachers sent home information letters regarding on-line access to the child’s AR with the first six week’s progress reports.  Parents are encouraged to view and discuss their child’s AR accomplishments.  If you need more information regarding the AR program or the access letter, please contact your child’s English or Reading teacher.
